Welcome to Still Mind Martial arts, our father and son martial arts blog. My son and I have over 30 years of combined martial arts experience to share.

We started this martial arts blog during the COVID-19 pandemic lock-downs (under a brand I had created 10 years earlier). The day I was presented with my Renshi belt was my last class before the COVID lock-downs began in Massachusetts. My Sensei, Kyoshi Keane at the Academy of Traditional Karate, said that in olden times when a student reached the level of Yondan (Fourth Degree Black Belt) and Renshi (Internationally Licensed Teacher) they would typically be sent out into the world to pass down what they had learned. That gave me the genesis of an idea for modern times. I would fuse many of my interests into something new. I would leverage my decades of experience as a web developer and digital media specialist with my 15+ years of martial arts experience and go out into the digital world to pass down the art with a new martial arts blog. The blog would combine original digital media content along with highlights and links to other great third-party content from my research.
My son had returned home when his college shut down and our family was “sheltering in place.” Starting this blog was a project we could use to make the best of the situation and come out the other side with something new and valuable that could be built upon. The blog would provide a great opportunity for my son to learn all aspects of creating and managing a WordPress website. It would be a vehicle to leverage our common interests and experiences in the martial arts; a project that we could work on together and use to pass on our experience to others as we continue along our martial arts path.
Following Our Earlier Sensei & Son Project

Years earlier when my son was in middle school I had provided him with a similar opportunity when we created our Sensei & Son HD128 Minecraft Texture Pack. That project offered the opportunity to learn how to create 3D model textures using Photoshop as well as how to set up and manage a Linux server. This was all accomplished using the wildly popular game – Minecraft on our own custom Minecraft Server that we ran on my DreamLight web servers. Our high resolution martial arts influenced texture pack which resulted from that project is still one of the most popular downloads on DreamLight.com.
Stress Relief During COVID Lock-downs

During the Wuhan Coronavirus lock-down we had continued training/teaching karate through online classes at the Academy of Traditional Karate, who did a great job quickly transitioning to virtual classes. I also began practicing my own Qigong training outside in the fresh air and sunshine for stress reducing meditation. Just before the pandemic hit I had previously recorded a series of videos documenting all 18 Matsubayashi Ryu kata. We would launch the blog with a new series of similar videos demonstrating simple Qigong exercises. We would start with Baduanjin and then continue with T’ai Chi Meditative Movements, Zhan Zhuang and more. These Qigong exercises helped me manage the stress of the lengthy COVID lock-downs. So I figured others might find them useful while in lock-down and beyond as well. Enjoy!
