This is a practice video session of the Seisan kata (form) from Chubu Shorin Ryu. Chubu is a slightly different, related style of Shorin Ryu than our primary style of Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu. We have 18 kata in Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu which form our core curriculum. We also practice a few additional supplemental kata. This particular kata, Seisan, was taught to us by Hanshi Richard Bernard, Judan (10th degree black belt).
Supplemental Kata to Expand Techniques and Prevent Stagnation
Learning and practicing additional kata, from outside our core style, gives us a chance to expand our repertoire of techniques. It also helps keep our karate from stagnating. It’s especially important at the higher levels to continue to learn new techniques and forms. This exercises and maintains our ability to learn. Chubu Shorin Ryu Seisan has a few techniques that are notably different than in Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu. There’s a series of chest blocks done with the same punching hand as the reverse punches in the opening sequence. This is opposite of our traditional style. There are a number of stomping hook stances and a couple of high cat stances. These are different than our usual steps and stances.
Video Sessions to Assess Performance and Continue Improving
It is useful to periodically video your practice sessions because sometimes you may feel like you are performing a technique a certain way. But, when you see it on video, you find you may not be doing it quite the way you thought you were. So, it’s a great way to take a snapshot of your techniques and performance in order to asses your progress and continue improving.
