The above video shows a practice session of a kobudo drill using the Sai (metal truncheon). This is the third of three Sai drills that we practice in the kobudo program I run at The Academy of Traditional Karate. This drill is composed of three sets (low, middle, high) of Sai block and strike combinations. There are five low block/strike combinations, four middle block/strike combinations and three high block/strike combinations. The stances are all Zenkutsu-dachi (front leaning stance). The Sai combinations are practiced on both the right and left sides with four repetitions of each block/strike combo.
Periodically video taping practice sessions like this is a great way to review and analyze your own performance. On video you can see what you are doing well and where you can continue to improve. Practicing Karate/Kobudo is always a constant process of learning, evaluating and improving.
I videoed this practice session in our basement dojo on 03/12/22. Stay tuned for my next post which will include a step-by-step breakdown and a PDF practice reference sheet for this drill. Subsequent posts will move onto some two person Escrima drills which MJ & I video taped over the summer.
