I was honored to receive my Renshi (International Licensed Teacher) belt from Kyoshi Keane at the Academy of Traditional Karate where I’ve been training and teaching since 2005 with my son MJ. Earning the rank of Renshi has been a long, difficult and rewarding journey. In our dojo, the Renshi teaching rank generally becomes available sometime after reaching Yondan (4th Degree Black Belt) and continuing to actively train and teach. My path to Renshi included the following final milestones.
- Yondan — 7/28/18
- waka-Renshi (New or 1/2 Renshi) — 12/1/18
- Renshi — 12/7/19
It then took a few months for my Renshi belt to arrive from Japan due to delays from the Corona Virus shutdowns. So, my Renshi belt presentation took place on 3/11/20 during my last class before the COVID-19 shutdowns forced the dojo to temporarily transition to remote only online classes. I’m looking forward to getting back on the dojo floor to continue training, teaching and passing on the art.
