Takayoshi Nagamine A Simple Man

I have read a couple of books written by O-Sensei Shoshin Nagamine, the founder of our style of karate – Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu. So I know a little bit about him. After O-Sensei Shoshin Nagamine retired in 1991 his son Takayoshi Nagamine followed in his father’s footsteps and took up the mantle as the head of the World Matsubayashi-ryu (Shorin-ryu) Karate-do Association until he passed away in 2012. I had seen a few grainy old videos of Soke Takayoshi practicing karate as a shodan (1st Degree Black Belt) as well as his three volume Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu Karate DVD series which details the history of Matsubayashi Ryu and his father. But I really don’t know much at all about Soke Takayoshi himself. So I’m looking forward to learning more about him and his impact on the development of Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu in this NEW BOOK Takayoshi Nagamine A Simple Man. It was written by one of his longtime student black belts Sensei Bill George.

[Now that I’ve had a chance to read this great book I’ve posted a book review. Check it out!]

Takayoshi Nagamine A Simple Man

The life and history of Soke Takayoshi Nagamine is remembered by one of his original students and black belts, Bill George. George sensei brings to life the early years, in the 1970’s, when Soke was teaching daily at his dojo in Cincinnati, Ohio. George sensei provides the history, progress and development of Matsubayashi-ryu Karate-do, as Soke traveled around the United States and Canada teaching seminars and clinics, from 1980 to the 2000’s. George sensei provides a factual, historical, and passionate description of his times and adventures with Soke from 1970 until his passing in 2012. George sensei has a keen insight into Soke’s life and Matsubayashi-ryu Karate-do that you will not find with other American Matsubayashi-ryu instructors. He shares with you factual events and an honest account of his years and life with Soke Takayoshi Nagamine.

  • Excellent book. A quick review – Easy & fun read, short (106 pgs) and a good amount of great clear pictures. I really enjoyed the book, ended up reading in it’s entirety in a one day!! Be aware, it is as much about Bill George’s (author) “life w Soke Nagamine” as it about Takayoshi. I read it as Bill George Sensei (now Kyoshi – when you read the book you’ll understand), finally able to grieve the death of his Sensei, Takayoshi (who passed away in 2012), so he wrote a book about his life with him. I was inspired about training in “no fooling” traditional karate! Paused in the middle of reading to do some makiwara training!
